What Are The Advantages?Receiving online education today is more popular than ever. With so many universities, schools and training programs that are available for individuals to enroll in, the choices of job fields and careers for everyone as a reality is very real.
The world has never before moved at such a fast pace ever. To many of us, especially with jobs, families and other responsibilities, down time is becoming a rare commodity. Everything in our lives seems to in a cycle that does not allow us much time to be able to slow down.
Many individuals want to go back to school, yet feel trapped in this cycle that will not let them drive back and forth to school, or take time off during the day to attend classes.
An advantage of distance learning is the freedom of not having to physically go back to school. All your courses, learning instructions and assignments are as far away as any laptop, or desktop computer with connection to the Internet. You could go on vacation for a month anywhere in the world and still be able to take all of your classes with ease.
So many individuals these days are reaching out to accomplish their higher education because of the advantage of distance learning that online education provides as that resource to better their lives.
In today’s hot job market, the hot careers that provide future security are also many of this career avenues that online degree programs are offering. It is a good match.
Many of the courses offered by these online education centers are gravitated around the projected demands that companies will need to progress. A person that has a degree and training in one of these demand fields will be ensuring their future.
It is because of this growing expansion that more people today than ever before want a better chance at career advancement, breaking into new careers and open up more options for themselves in the job market. It is not just enough to learn a new trade sometimes. Most online education centers offer degrees, or certification. To have that piece of paper stating you have been accredited can mean the difference of a job paying $32,000 a year and one paying $60,000 per year.
Another main advantage of distant learning is having the ability to plan your course study of an online degree program around your existing schedule. The flexibility that online degree programs provide is simple. You can go online and do course study and assignments night and day. 24/7 is a very real tool of flexibility that the online education sites provide.
Getting a degree via online education can double or even triple your earnings, not to mention the many perks that go with the position. This is one reason why a lot of employed individuals are now studying for advanced education in other fields or career that are in demand and offer high paying salaries.
Online education are being offered by highly accredited and prestigious universities across the United States. So if you receive an online degree from any of these institutions, you put yourself in a good position for having a better future for you and your family.

Some 'disenfranchised by their location'

Electronic delivery seeks to correct an imbalance in opportunity, she said.

"There are students all across the state who are disenfranchised by their location. That's a travesty," Cundy said. "Location of the desk should have nothing to do with opportunities available to students."
Many small to midsized districts are attempting to offer their own AP classes as student interest dictates and resources allow. The new program becomes another factor to consider. In Arlington, 12 students signed up for AP English next fall, so the school will offer it in its own classroom. Five students wanted AP physics, so they'll take it through the online incentive program, Principal Rhonda Gross said.

West Central offers its own AP calculus, chemistry and English literature - all among the seven target courses - along with AP economics. The online option will expand the choices.

"I can see it helping 10 students a year at West Central that need that extra flexibility or opportunity," said counselor Kieron Murphy.
The National Math and Science Initiative will send the money from Dallas to the West River Foundation in Rapid City. The foundation subcontracts with Technology and Innovation in Education. Parry is director of TIE but will retire July 1 to become director of Learning Power. Several agencies will advise Learning Power.

The intent is for the Texas group to provide seed money the first four years.
"They're building the on-ramp so we can sustain the program long term," Parry said.

'It takes a pretty highly motivated student'

Mathison and classmate Megan Fredberg take AP U.S. history through a provider that links them with a teacher in Seattle. They study together in a computer lab at their school in Hartford. Both see advantages in the online setting but also the drawbacks.

"If you ask a question, you sometimes wait a day for a response," said Fredberg, 17. "It's kind of hard to communicate. We can call him, but he wants us to e-mail him."
Response time varies case to case, but remoteness itself is a challenge in that format.

"It's online, in chat rooms and not seeing face to face. It takes a pretty highly motivated student to do that," said Tim Pflanz, principal at Tri-Valley. His school will offer AP calculus next fall because of student interest. Others will take AP courses online.

"They're just highly motivated individuals seeing an opportunity to take college-level classes and the chance to make $100 without getting charged for taking the test," Pflanz said.
The format, though, fits many students.

"Look at current student demographics. They want 24-7 access," said Cundy, the principal at the NSU center who also teaches online. "I have a student who got a 5 on AP calculus. He liked to do all his assignments on Saturdays. Many of my e-mails come in after 10 at night, often after midnight. If I'm in a school setting, those questions aren't getting asked."

Students, teachers have financial incentives

Online learning has been around for several years. The state's virtual high school, a clearinghouse at the Department of Education in Pierre, has coordinated online classes for about 1,700 South Dakota students since it opened last year.

The Learning Power program seeks to intensify the effort at the Advanced Placement level. Students now in AP classes are free to skip the spring exam. Under this program, the exam is required, not optional. Communication between teacher and student will not be simultaneous, in a bow to modern study habits, and participants will get a financial boost. Students will not have to pay the testing fee, about $80, and if they pass the test, both they and their teachers will receive $100.
The tests are graded on a scale from 1 to 5. To get college credit, a student must score at least a 3.

One student planning to participate is Darrah Bjorklund, 17, a junior at Arlington High School. She'll take AP physics online to prepare for majoring in aeronautical engineering at the University of North Dakota.

"I want to push myself and excel," she said.
In Hartford, Ryne Mathison, 16, a junior at West Central High School, might try AP physics online as a senior to prepare for a computer engineering major in college. The $100 payoff is not a deal-maker, he said. Still, the testing bonus is attractive with college expenses ahead.

"A hundred dollars makes you that much closer. It's an incentive," he said.

Program aimed at smaller schools

The program is not geared to large school districts such as Sioux Falls, where about 1,000 students take AP classes in traditional classrooms at Roosevelt, Lincoln and Washington. Students here would be eligible, especially in the case of a scheduling conflict, but they would need the school district's approval to participate. The district pushes AP courses and helps with the testing fee for students in need. But it's deeply invested in providing classroom teaching rather than the Internet product.

"We're certainly not going to deny someone that," said Washington High counselor Matt Mims. "But we're not going to promote it because we have the classes they're offering. I don't see the students taking it online when they can take it in person live with the teacher."
Promoters don't argue the point. Jim Parry, director of the Learning Power program, said he expects 400 South Dakota high school students will take part next fall with a chance to earn their $100 bonuses next spring. He'd like to see that number balloon to 600. "Frankly, I hope we break the bank," he said. Still, while flexibility and technical innovation are advantages in online learning, it's also considered a consolation prize compared to a traditional classroom.

"Philosophically, when you can have face-to-face instruction with a strong teacher, that's always the first preference," Parry said from Rapid City.

Advanced classes spread via Web

Program pays small-school kids who earn college credit
Jon Walker • jwalker@argusleader.com • April 6, 2008
South Dakota's newest leap into online learning aims for isolated students who might be undiscovered geniuses in math and science.

A program starting this fall will use the Internet to make the access easy. It will offer a $100 testing bonus for students to make it more appealing. And it will run on private money in an age when public money goes elsewhere in education.

The result is that students in rural areas will be able to immerse themselves - many for the first time - in the Advanced Placement program that offers college- level training in high school.
"We have to get the opportunities to where the student is," said Mary Cundy, principal at the E-Learning Center at Northern State University.

The program is called Learning Power. It will operate from an office in Rapid City with an array of supportive agencies, public and private, including NSU and the state Department of Education.
It will run on a four-year, $2 million grant from the National Math and Science Initiative, backed by ExxonMobil. The Texas-based agency seeks to correct a shortage of young adults in science and math careers, so the AP courses in the program all have that flavor. The lineup includes five courses in the hard sciences - biology, chemistry, statistics, calculus and physics - and two more in English language and literature. They all fit under the AP banner endorsed by the College Board of New York, which enables students scoring well on spring exams to get a head start on college.

CenterTrac 2.0 Manages Tutoring and Education Centers Online

LearnSpeed LLC today introduced version 2.0 of CenterTrac, an online education and tutoring center management system. The new version adds greater functionality to the existing product which puts every aspect of an education center’s business online. From logging instructional sessions to generating invoice data, CenterTrac dramatically streamlines daily operations and supplies automatic feedback to clients. It provides center managers with realtime reports and data exporting. The system can save data as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and PDF files and built-in QuickBooks exporting makes entering monthly invoice data effortless.

CenterTrac has helped its clients grow their businesses and even open additional centers using fewer resources, thanks to improved efficiency of operations.

“Since starting with CenterTrac, our administrative time and expenses decreased dramatically,” said Colleen L. Christopher, owner of Study Depot. “More significantly, our retention of students has improved, parents are much happier and tutors feel more involved.”

“CenterTrac works very economically with education centers of all sizes,” said LearnSpeed President Jared Wells. “If your center is just starting out or servicing several thousand students, CenterTrac will meet your needs and fit into your budget. Our experience has shown that centers using our product have more than covered the expense of the service through direct cost savings and increased business.“

“CenterTrac has given us a critical tool for handling the volume of our SES students,” says William Harris, Controller for Failure Free Reading. “When we needed a report to export data the State of New York could import, CenterTrac came through. That feature alone paid for the service many times over.”

In addition to a completely new, real-time user interface, CenterTrac 2.0 adds major new modules for use by both private tutoring and Supplemental Education Services (SES) providers.

The Student Assessment module allows a center to record testing and evaluation data for each student. That data can then be exported to reports or spreadsheets for analysis.

The Session Credits module allows center administrators to assign the number of available sessions for each student by session type. The system can send alerts based on the remaining sessions dropping below any set limit. Instructors can also be prevented from entering sessions for any student whose credits have depleted.

The Group Sessions module allows both private and SES instructors to create a single log for multiple students in the same tutoring session. Easy attendance-taking and group notes make handling classes a breeze.

The Time-Sheets module allows a center to assign different pre-approved billing rates and types to instructors and administrators with default pay rates that can be overridden per user. Instructors and administrators can then use the site to log their hours. Reports make end-of-the-month payroll a snap.

CenterTrac 2.0 has been built using the same advanced browser technology that Google uses for applications like Gmail and Google Calendar. This makes the new CenterTrac version feel less like a website and more like a local desktop application. But as before, new features are continually added and every user of CenterTrac instantly has access to them.

“We made the new CenterTrac both technically advanced and flexible,” said LearnSpeed CTO Timothy White. “Using the site will make you forget it’s actually a browser. We’ve built the system to support significant growth for our clients and a superior user experience well into the future. There are a lot of great new features on the horizon.”

CenterTrac 2.0 comes with a new tiered pricing model that costs centers less the more they use the system. Centers are only billed for each active student they see each month. Access to all other information including work orders, communications logs, the task system, and student historical information is free.

About CenterTrac

JA Launches Online Education Program

(January 24, '07, 3:51 IDEX Online Staff Reporter)
Jewelers of America’s new educational initiative, J-Biz, launched its online course at the JA New York Show. The online courses will enable wider access to JA’s education programs, which until now have been available only at live seminars and in-store.
The J-Biz online program has been tailored to the schedule of a busy retail sales associate. The courses are typically divided into 45-minute modules. The modules are then sub-divided into 15-minute segments, to facilitate even faster learning opportunities. Maximum learning flexibility is the key. The online courses will be available to members on JA’s website, www.jewelers.org.
“We recognize that many JA members have only limited access to our live seminars. Online access makes it possible to provide just-in-time education to members wherever they are,” says JA Director of Education David Peters.

According to JA President and CEO Matthew A. Runci, “Continued professional training is no longer dictated by one’s ability to travel to an industry event or trade show. Now, JA education is available to anyone with a dial-up Internet connection.” The online program provides an opportunity to reach tens of thousands of retail jewelers and their sales associates with focused courses they can turn to when they want basic information quickly, Runci added.
Students can also choose take the entire training course at once. Completion times will range from three to six hours, with some courses lasting as long as 10 to12 hours.
Among the first online courses from J-Biz are communicating color; the basics of selling diamonds; ethical selling and relationship selling. J-Biz will also adapt some of JA’s best-known in-print training programs – such as Counter Intelligence and Jewelry 101. A Beta launch of the first online courses is scheduled for early February.
J-Biz also plans to offer its members existing educational courses through partnerships with a variety of other associations and groups. For example, JA has already partnered with the Jewelers Education Foundation of the American Gem Society to offer JEF’s Graduate Sales Associate course online.
To make the J-Biz education program accessible to the widest audience possible, the majority of the new online courses will be available to JA members at an estimated $20 to $50 for most courses. Access is also designed for narrow-bandwidth delivery, meaning courses will work just as well on dial-up connections as on high-speed broadband Internet connections.

Online Degree Programs Enrollment Continues to Explode

Educators and employers have come to view online learning as a legitimate means of
obtaining a college degree. Most colleges and universities now offer online courses, and a growing number of undergraduate and graduate students are supplementing the classroom courses with online learning. Additionally, online learning has made higher education more accessible to people who otherwise couldn't earn a degree. OnlineDegreeZone.com features more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate degree programs plus guidance and advice for those exploring distance learning and online classes.

Online education: focused on the students

About a year ago, The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article titled, “Lectures on the Go,” which outlined the benefits and drawbacks of professors using ‘coursecasting.’ One professor of American University commented, “If you make your lecture available as a podcast, students can relisten to troublesome passages, and it’s easy for them to slow things down.” The University of California Berkeley took coursecasting to a new level last week, by making over 250 hours of symposia and whole courses available to the general public for free.Last Tuesday, September 26th, 2006: the UC Berkeley announced that it “will be the first university with its own page on the Google Video Web.” Course topics include Physics, Biology, and Information Technology with Humanities features like poetry readings and discussions regarding current global affairs. The Executive Director of Public Affairs and Google Video project manager, Dan Mogulof, commented: “Now, through our collaboration with Google Video, we can more easily share those resources and bring extraordinary value to the people of California, the taxpayers who help support our institution. This is a perfect example of how technology is expanding our idea of what it means to be a truly public university."UC Berkeley’s latest addition to the World Wide Web only reiterates the trend to make education available to a wider audience. An article last week from the Arizona Daily Star highlighted the benefits online learning. Students interviewed for the article mentioned that they are able to find the courses that best suit their career goals, continue working as they earn their degrees, and are “able to balance every important part of … life.”A survey from Northern Arizona University finds “students are just as satisfied with online classes as they are with the on-campus programs.” NAU’s vice-president for extended programs and dean of distance learning, Fred Hurst, commented, “The bread and butter for universities is providing access to students to degree programs so they can get a degree and better their lives. As we continue to build up additional (online) programs for students to enroll in that’s the big payoff.

Applying To Colleges And Universities

When applying to colleges and/or universities, it is best to do so as early as possible. The earlier you apply, the better chances you will have of being accepted into your program of interest. As expected, many college courses fill up quickly, which is why early applications often stand a better chance of acceptance. Before applying to certain colleges and/or universities, it is a good idea to review their freshman enrollment requirements. These requirements generally pertain to anyone who has graduated from high school within the past five years. Beyond that, required high school courses are not as highly considered due to the fact that so much time has passed. Therefore, even if you did not take the necessary high school courses, you may be able to attend the college of your choice if you are willing to wait for five or more years before enrolling. Almost every college and/or university charges an application fee when applying. This fee is generally very reasonable and is often less than $50.00. This is a non-refundable fee, which is not refunded for any reason including a denial of acceptance. Applications to colleges and/or universities will often be under advisement for several weeks. At that time, the school will either send a letter of congratulations or one of denial. Many modern colleges and universities have websites and even allow applications to be submitted online. This is believed to speed up the application process and may result in a quicker decision than if submitted by mail. In the case of online applications, the application fee will generally be charged to a major credit card. If you do not have a credit card, you may have to mail your application along with a check or money order. It is important to remember that, under no circumstances, should you ever send cash through the mail.Once you receive the college or university's acceptance, if applicable, it will be time to begin plans for enrollment. Many do not know this, but there is a big difference between acceptance and enrollment. Being accepted does not automatically mean the student is enrolled as this is just another step in the quest for a college education. During enrollment, a class schedule will be granted and, if requested, a campus room will be assigned. There are a number of living arrangements for college students, which may include on-campus housing, living with roommates, living alone or living at home with family. Living on campus is not a requirement of colleges or universities, but it does make for an easier commute to and from class.

Are You Thinking Of Online Education?

Though the benefits of getting education or earning an online degree are many, I will discuss just a few. The major reason many people are going for online education is because of two things. One is the present job or vocation they’re engaged in. The rate of unemployment in our society is high. Therefore, if you have a job you cannot afford to leave and head back to school to get a degree. So, many people like you look for online education while keeping their job. Secondly, many people are raising a family. They can’t afford to leave the comfort of their family. Most of the people going for online education are the bread winner of their family. Now, let’s move to some of the benefits of having an online degree. One, you stand to learn at your own pace. This is good considering your busy job schedule and family commitment. Your present mode of operation cannot allow you to follow stringent class schedules like in the traditional universities or colleges. You attend the class and do the assignment anytime and anywhere via the internet. However, you have to complete the work within duration. Two, you don’t have to abandon your present job or family to head back to school. You get your degree online in the comfort of your living room or office. It’s not easy abandoning your job. That is where you get the money to finance your education. And breaking family ties is not advisable. Online education makes it possible to be in the comfort of your family while earning a degree. Three, your career can either be changed or uplifted with an online education. It’s not easy changing career with traditional universities or colleges. It means you have to go back to school and enroll for a new course or programme. But with online education, changing of career is very easy. Your career can also receive a great boost when you have an online degree. Many employers are happy when you progress, when you’re not stagnant in your field. Employers are willing and ready to pay people who have solutions to problems and who have current knowledge of events in their field of endeavor. Online education is what you need to get among the top hierarchy in your organization. Though there are many benefits of online education, I believe these few will be enough to drive home the point that online education is ideal for you and your loved ones.

Test Taking Strategies

These twelve tips will help you get through any test and as long as you prepared adequately for it, you will certainly get an A.
1. Come to the test prepared and feeling confident that you know the material. Make sure that you are not very hungry or very full and that you are well-rested. Avoid eating sugary or processed foods before the test. Avoid items such as candy, carbonated soft drinks, junk foods, and fried foods. Snack on fresh fruit or veggies immediately before to get your mind off the test and give you some sustenance.
2. Breathe. Relax. Imagine yourself acing the test. It is amazing what a little positive imagery can do for you.
3. Read ALL of the directions carefully. Reread them again once you have finished. Look through the test to see what types of questions are asked, how many questions, if there are any major essays, if you have choices about questions that you can answer, etc. Make sure you know how much each section is worth so you can budget your time.
4. If the test involves specific equations, conversions, dates or anything else that you must memorize, write it on the top or margin of the test paper as soon as the test is handed out. Remembering complicated equations and dates before you have answered any questions is a lot easier than trying to remember them after you have answered half of the test questions and you brain is starting to get tired.
5. Answer all easy questions first. This will help you get into the test taking mood and build confidence. Circle the numbers of the questions that you really have no idea about. You can come back to these later. Often times questions you answer later in the test might trigger something and help you answer a question that you were previously stuck on.
6. Narrow multiple choice answers down to the two you believe might be correct by crossing off the ones you positively know are not correct. This will improve your chances of guessing the right one.
7. True-False questions are often a favorite of some teachers and can be quite complicated at times. Keep in mind that every part of a true-false statement must be true in order to answer it as true. If any part is false, mark the entire statement false. You may want to underline the portion of the statement that you believe is false. If there are negatives in the statement such as “no or not”, and you are still not sure whether to mark it true or false, try re-reading the question without the “no or not”. Decide if this statement is true or false then answer the opposite on your test. Words indicating absoluteness (never, always, entirely, every, only, none) often tend to be used in false statements.
8. Try to construct concise answers that target the question and prove to the teacher that you know the material. Get right to the point in the first sentence or two of your answer. The rest of the answer should contain proof that you know what you are talking about. Give enough evidence to support your thoughts but don't over-answer the question. Writing a lot of fluff will usually leave the teacher thinking that you are writing for the sake of filling the space and that you really don't have a good handle on the correct answer.
9. Before you begin writing an essay, make sure you know exactly what the question is asking. Try to restate the question in your own words. If you can't do this with confidence, make a quick visit to the teacher and have him or her clarify it for you. Once confident in what the question is asking, take a few moments to get your thoughts together and write some notes in the margin or even create an outline on scrap paper if you have time.
10. If you find that you are running short on time and still have some open-ended questions left to answer, write something rather than leaving the space blank. Create a brief outline to show the teacher that you do know the answer, but you didn't have enough time to write an entire essay. You maybe able to get say more in an outline form than you can if you were only able to write a few opening sentences of your essay. Partial credit is better than no credit at all.
11. Once you believe you are finished with the test, reread everything again to be sure that you answered every question fully and completely. If you have time, cover up your answers with your hand or another sheet of paper and ask yourself what answer you would give if you had to answer the question again. Compare this answer with what you have already written down. Only change the original answer if you find that you made a silly mistake or originally misinterpreted the question. It is usually best to go with your original instinct when you are truly unsure of an answer.
12. Be neat. The last thing a teacher wants to do while correcting mounds of tests is to spend time deciphering what a student has illegibly written.

How to choose the right online university

Formal education is getting very important in today’s competitive world. Proper education and reputed college degree can help one grab better job opportunities and demand higher salary from employers. But owing to certain circumstances or due to lack of funds one is usually restrained from getting a college degree. Online universities present a lucrative option for people with time constraints. Expected increase in money earned after completion of the course would help repay the loan amount.
Admission requirements
Formalities and academic qualification that are essential to enroll for a particular course are indicative of the universities standard of education. Imparting admission only on the basis of money payment capacity should lower the credibility of the university. As certain minimum academic qualification must be mandatory prior to enroll for graduate courses. Not having any such restrictions results in accumulation of unworthy students who would latter be one’s fellow mates.
